Pumpkins are still available! Come walk out in the field and find the one just waiting for you. .20 cents per pound. Also available are winter squashes, Butternut, Buttercup, Hubbard, Sweet meat, and Acorn. We also have a free CHILD SIZE straw maze available, the kids have been having a ball. Come on out to the Pumpkin patch :)

Sweet Corn is here!!

You read it right, it's FINALLY here. With our long cold Spring everything is behind about two weeks. We have also Green beans, onions, carrots, zucchini, yellow squash, potatoes, tomatoes, green bell peppers, jalapenos, sweet chili peppers, watermelon and cantaloupe (from Hagerman near Twin Falls).

Peas!!

Sorry for the long hiatus :) Things have been busy around here what with reunions and keeping up with the farmer's market.
We are on the second patch harvesting peas. We have one more patch to go, so we will have "good" peas for about another 10 days, then slightly older peas for a few more days after that. We also have onions, small heads of cabbage, beet greens with small beets on the bottom and new red potatoes. Coming up in about 10-14 days will be green beans. We have had questions about tomatoes. We picked the first two yesterday, the 24th. Many more and coming along behind and are looking really good! Help us spread the word. Also coming very soon are green bell peppers and in about 4 weeks sweet corn and cucumbers. Zucchini, summer squash, and eggplant are all looking good as well. Come and find us at the Rexburg Farmers market Friday nights from 4-8 pm. Also you're welcome to stop by our house, if you don't know where we are, leave a comment here with your email and I'll send you directions. See you soon!

Finishing High Tunnels

So, how did we get the plastic from a giant sheet on the ground, to the top of the tunnel? First you have to get the ropes over the ribs to attach to the plastic.
Behold, another use for duct tape:

It may take a village to raise a child, but it takes a large group of willing neighbors to pull the plastic over the top and then hold it in place while it's secured.

The ends are done first. Thanks to a helpful individual who loaned us his forklift and platform. Made this SO much easier. At least on one end. Couldn't fit the forklift in between the tunnels, so ladders had to work there (above)

The plastic is held in place with metal channels and "wiggle wire" that fits in the channels and keeps it tight.

One down, one to go.

End of the evening: Plastic finished, a few odds and ends to finish up.

Peppers were planted inside the tunnels on Saturday May 28. Next, tomatoes!

Well with the last few days so sunny and warm, dare we hope that it's here to stay? I'll be daring and hope :)
Here's the latest news from the Giant Garden.....High Tunnels! Similar to a green house, these are hopefully going to be our answer to getting tomatoes to ripen on time and peppers to go with them. The tunnels are large enough to drive the tractor through, and will extend the growing season of whatever is planted inside by a couple of weeks.

There are two, each 96 feet long by 30 feet wide. Don't forget to check with us when it's time for tomatoes and salsa making!

So far we have planted Cabbage (below pic), carrots, beets, spinach, radishes, onions, peas, and potatoes. The first planting of peas is up and should be ready (if the weather cooperates) around the 4th of July. The second planting is in the ground and should be a couple of weeks behind the first. The corn planter is getting put into shape for the Sweet corn, traditionally ready about mid August.

To be planted in the near future: Green beans, zucchini, yellow summer squash, eggplant, sweet corn, cucumbers, winter squash, pumpkins, and getting those tomatoes started in their new high tunnel homes. Pumpkin Patch is ready!

My word, has it been this long since I've posted? I guess we've been up to our necks in sweet corn! Now that the corn is finished, it's on to pumpkins.
We thought we had a home for most of our pumpkins, but the arrangements fell through, so we have more pumpkins than usual in our patch. If you know of someone who would like to come bring their family, roommates, cub scout group, preschool group, field trip group or just come by to see, please pass the word and/or a link to this blog, we would surely appreciate it! Bring your cameras to take your picture on the straw bales with all the pumpkins. Take your time wandering in the patch to find the perfect one. The patch is open from 3 pm to dark Monday through Saturday. We're located at 158 N 4544 E in Rigby. 8 miles East from Rigby, 2 miles West from Ririe on the Rigby/Ririe Hwy (48). Look for 4544 E and the "Ashland Produce" sign. Hope to see you soon!

Sweet Corn is here!!

Long awaited, two weeks late (Thank you long, wet Spring) Sweet corn is finally HERE! $3.00 per dozen this year.

We are also still harvesting the following:

Green, purple, yellow beans $2.00 already picked, $1.00 pick your own
Onions $1 per pound
Carrots $1 per pound
Bell peppers 2 for $1
Jalapenos 8 for $1
Banana Peppers 8 for $1
Red, yellow, russet, purple potatoes
Beets purple and golden $1 per pound
Slicing cucumbers (just started) 2 for $1
Zucchini $1 per pound
Yellow crookneck squash $1 per pound
Tomatoes $1 per pound

You can find us every Friday night at the Rexburg Farmers' Market. We're located on the SW corner of the market, you can identify us by the red and white checked tablecloths.
We're also at Scotty's hardware on Saturday's from about 9:30 AM until 2 PM or so. Come and visit!

Green Beans

All those who have been waiting for Green Beans, plan on next week! Pick your own $1.00 per pound Already picked $2.00 per pound. Bushel price is $45.00 We also have purple and yellow beans for variety

Cucumbers in hopefully two weeks -- slicers and also a pickling variety

Everyone's favorite-- Zucchini ! We pick it very small, perfect for stir frying, or steaming with green beans and sprinkled with salt and pepper. Or grating parmesean cheese over top, yummy! Don't forget those Zucchini brownies and bread (making an appearance at this weeks market) Did you know that August 8th is National Sneak Zucchini on your neighbor's porch day? Seriously, check it out here.

Don't forget to order your fruit for August. Peaches, and Apricots (plus other varieties) all coming from the Caldwell area. 22 pound boxes will be $18.00. Hello! Thanks for checking out our Giant Garden Blog. Just a quick update:

Peas should be ready for picking in approximately two weeks. We're looking forward to this years' varieties. We have three for this year. 1. Shelling garden pea. 2. Snow Peas. 3. Stir fry variety. Yum, I can hardly wait!

For future planning most of the other crops are right on schedule for being late. This cool Spring hasn't helped in the garden planting. Sweet corn will likely begin around the middle of August, unless we get some really hot days to give the plants a boost. Green beans should be right behind the peas. We also have beets, several varieties of peppers, tomatoes (trying some new things to get them to ripen earlier this year) Cucumbers (not cooperating right now, so we'll have to see what that brings) and hopefully Strawberries. Another of my favorites...........yum!!

Look for us at the Rexburg Farmers' Market every Friday through October 15th. We've also got another pumpkin patch in the works, so don't miss that. More later, and pictures to go with it :)

Still have potatoes!

Thanks to all who came to the pumpkin patch this year. We had a great time meeting many people and hope to see you all again next year. I'd like to make a Straw maze for the children next year, and with a little better planning on my part, I'll get it done!

We still have lots of potaotes and some squash left. Potatoes are in 50 pound boxes. $18 for reds and yellows $15 for Russets. We can also get them through the winter.

Pumpkins, Squash and Cornstalks, Oh my!

We're having a little fall fun here at our house. Come and visit our pumpkin patch! Many sizes of Pumpkins to choose from. Small gourds to large Jack-O-Lantern sizes.

On October 17, we have a Photographer coming to spend the day. She is offering 15 minutes "mini sittings" with your pictures burned on a CD and printing rights. Here are the details:

Harvesting week of September 7

Sweet corn--still lots left! the main variety on now is called "Serendipity", an excellent freezing corn variety. $3.00 per dozen, or we'll work with you if you're buying 20 dozen or more for freezing. Just ask us

Green beans-- still growing. they're getting a little on the "mature" side, but still good, I think.

Onions--small but lots of flavor

Carrots--didn't turn out very pretty this year, but are so good! Scarlet Nantz variety

Zucchini and summer crookneck--Still growing. Plants got a light "toasting" the other night when it got cold, but are still producing.

Winter Hubbard Squash-- Nearly ready. We tried one for dinner a few nights ago, yum!

Potatoes--Red and Russet available. In a few weeks we'll have access to Russet potatoes for winter storage. We'll keep you updated on this as it gets closer

Cucumbers--we have a long list for pickling cukes, but still have slicers available.

Pumpkins--plan now to come to our pumpkin patch. Bring the little ones and your camera to wander through the patch to pick the perfect pumpkin. Straw bales available for free photo opportunity. Families in the past few years have told us how much they've enjoyed themselves. Patch will be open October 1 through 31 from 3 to 8 pm Mon through Fri and Saturday from 11 am to 8 pm.

We'll be available at the Rexburg Farmer's Market Friday the 10th from 4 pm to 8 pm or come see us at Scotty's in Rigby Saturday morning until we sell out.

Sweet corn, bi-color kernels called "Synergy" $3.00 per dozen. Harvested by hand daily.

Green beans. Picked: $2.00 per pound U-pick $1.00 per pound.

Red and Russet potatoes 5 pounds for $3.50 (reds) Russets 5 pounds for $2.00

Zucchini (green and yellow) and Yellow Crookneck squash $1.00 per pound

Green Bell Peppers. 2 for $1.00

Cucumbers 2 for $1.00

Carrots $1.00 per pound

Coming from CWT farms (Our sister farm in Sugar City which specializes in grains including Spelt) Peaches, pears, nectarines, apples. All from the western side of Idaho near Caldwell. Excellent varieties for canning. Look for the popular Elberta peach, about September 11. Advanced orders are encouraged to make sure you get the amounts you want, they go fast!

Weekly we are at the Rexburg Farmers Market from 4-8 P.M. on Friday evenings through October 9.

Harvesting week of July 31

It's almost August! We can hardly believe it.

The peas are now finished. Now it's on to Green Beans......yummy!

We've also got a bumper crop of Zucchini (green and yellow) and Yellow Crookneck Squash. My favorite!

Sweet corn will be ready to almost ready in two weeks.

This morning I picked a cucumber (the only one I noticed), about five inches long. Two more weeks and they'll be ready to go.

Red Potatoes are tasty and getting better. Also available: Russets, yellows and purples.

Tomatoes are coming along. If we can get the weather to warm up we'll have a great crop.

Peas, peas, peas

We'll have peas through the end of this week (24th) a few will still be hanging on after that, but if you want a large amount, come earlier.

Green beans should start this weekend. They're tiny now and looking like a great crop.

Red potatoes are harvesting now, and fantastic!

Zucchini and crookneck yellow squash will be ready starting this weekend.

Tomatoes are coming along.

Green peppers are looking great. We'll have some of those ready very soon, check back.

We have peas ready. They will only last for approximately 10 more days, could be as many as 14 days, but sometimes it's hard to tell. Pick your own are $1.00 per pound. Already picked are $2.00 per pound

Spinach is usually available, probably for the next couple of weeks.

New baby potatoes are ready, and so good! $1.00 per pound.

Looking ahead:

Green beans should be ready starting the 20th.

Cucumbers are doing really well. Mid August is about the time for those to start.

OK it's been a little bit longer than a month......

Haven't updated, because it rained nearly the entire month of June. Our pipe movers (children) were glad for the long break and sleeping in, in the morning.

Peas are ready! Also spinach and beets. Very soon new red baby potatoes, Yum!!

Tomato plants are doing well and survived the transplant, which can stress them out. Cucumbers are weeded and doing well, pumpkins are looking good, sweet corn is finally gaining some height. Green beans are looking good and will likely be ready in 2-3 weeks.

We have produce at the Rexburg farmer's market every friday through the summer. The market is from 4-8 P.M.

Look for more frequent updates now that Summer has decided to stick around ;-)

Hello, thanks for stopping by :) We've started a blog for our "giant garden" so you can see what we've been up to, and also what will be coming up in the harvest. We'll update weekly on what's been planted, how it's doing, when we'll be harvesting, and how you can get in on the bounty. On Saturday May 23, the tomatoes were put in. Lots and lots of them, and also some bell peppers
